Most people played GTA 3 on a rented PS2 in a living room. People are still looking for it in 2026 because of that memory.
I tested this GTA 3 Highly Compressed repack version on my laptop, which is a Core i3 8th Gen with 8 GB RAM and running Windows 10. It started in 18 seconds, played at 45-55 FPS on the Intel UHD 620, and did not crash once.
Most GTA 3 downloads you find online are broken. Missing radio stations. Cutscenes are silent. Some versions do not even launch on Windows 10. This version fixes all of that.
This post has download links, compression details, what is included, 8 real game features, system requirements, installation steps, error fixes, and honest FAQ answers.
About GTA 3
GTA 3 was released in 2001. You play as Claude, a criminal whose girlfriend betrays him and leaves him for dead during a bank robbery. Liberty City is divided into three islands. They unlock one by one as the story moves forward.
What made this game different was cause and effect. Run from the cops, and they will chase you. Blow up a car, and the city will respond. No other game in 2001 did that.
I recently replayed it and was surprised by how difficult the missions still feel. No long cutscenes. No symbols for each step. You can figure things out in the game. This game shows why GTA became what it is today for people who did not have a PS2 when they were younger.
Why This Compressed Version?
The original PC version is 500 MB in size. This GTA 3 Highly Compressed repack is 130 MB to download. That is 74% smaller. After you extract it, it takes up around 470 MB on your drive.
Everything important is kept. All story missions work. Radio stations play. Cutscene audio is clean. The save system works across sessions. Graphics quality is not reduced.
The only thing removed was extra packaging from the original setup files. There were no changes that affect gameplay.
Features of GTA 3 Highly Compressed
- Three Island Progression: Liberty City opens in stages. Portland comes first, then Staunton Island, then Shoreside Vale. Each island unlocks through story progress. All unlock triggers work correctly in this version.
- Silent Protagonist: Claude never speaks. Other characters talk; Claude acts. This gives the game a cold, noir feeling that most modern games do not have.
- Vehicle Handling Differences: Every vehicle class handles differently. A taxi drives nothing like a sports car. These physics differences are fully maintained here.
- Six Star Wanted System: One star brings a patrol car. Six stars bring army tanks. The escalation is smooth and matches the original game behavior.
- Parallel Mission Chains in Portland: Joey Leone, Luigi Goterelli, and Salvatore Leone each have separate mission lines running at the same time. All three chains are intact and work without broken triggers.
- Pay Phone Side Missions: Pay phones across all three islands ring with contract jobs. These are separate from the main story. Every pay phone mission worked during my test run.
- Hidden Package System: 100 packages are hidden across the map. Collect 10, and weapons spawn at your safe house. The counter saves correctly and carries over between sessions.
- Original Radio Stations: Chatterbox FM, Flashback FM, Head Radio, and others all play at full quality. This is one of the first things I checked because many broken versions online have silent radios.

FAQs
Does this version include all three islands and every story mission?
All three islands are here. Portland, Staunton Island, and Shoreside Vale are all playable. Every mission chain works, including the final missions on Shoreside Vale. Nothing was removed during compression.
Why does GTA 3 need compatibility mode on Windows 10 or 11?
GTA 3 was made for Windows XP. Its code uses memory methods that newer Windows versions do not handle the same way. Compatibility mode tells Windows to treat the game as if it were running on XP. Without it, the game crashes silently or shows a black screen.
Is this the same as the Steam version?
No. The Steam version is the Definitive Edition with updated graphics and some gameplay changes. This GTA 3 Highly Compressed repack is based on the original 2001 PC release. Missions, controls, and radio content match what people remember from the classic version.
Final Thoughts
GTA 3 Highly Compressed repack at 130 MB is a clean and working download that actually runs on budget hardware. My Core i3 laptop handled it without any lag at 720p.
