Most GTA 4 downloads online dont work. Either the EFLC episodes are missing, the game crashes because of a missing GFWL requirement, or the audio files are corrupted. I have downloaded and tested several versions before posting this one up. This version works.
This includes both the base GTA 4 and the EFLC content. The game can now be played on modern Windows without any extra steps because the GFWL dependency has been removed.
I tested the GTA 4 Highly Compressed repack on my Core i3-1005G1 laptop with 8 GB RAM and Intel UHD graphics on Windows 11. The game got to the main menu in 47 seconds. I got 28 to 32 FPS in Broker at 720p and low settings. Not excellent, but fully playable.

GTA 4 was published in 2008. It was different from any GTA game before it. The story is about an immigrant named Niko Bellic who is trying to make it in Liberty City. The city is based on New York. Every borough has its own vibe, its own traffic, its own trouble.
The weight of everything in this game made it stand out. Cars crashed with real physics. Niko stumbled when drunk. The ending of the story makes you make a choice that still has real-world effects in 2026.
There are still people looking for this game because the writing is good. Roman calling every few minutes has become a joke; however, the real story about Niko is serious and well done. You will not find that depth in most modern open-world games.
I remember the first time I played this, just driving around Liberty City in the rain. The lighting was amazing. That vibe is still present, even on low settings on my Core i3.
Why Choose This Compressed Version?
The original install is 22 GB. This GTA 4 Highly Compressed version is 7.5 GB. That is 65.9% smaller. After extraction, it unpacks to around 18 GB, so keep that in mind before you download.
The audio quality is the same. There are still all 19 radio stations. No tracks were removed or re-encoded. It has all of the story missions. Included are The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, episodes from EFLC.
GFWL is replaced with a compatibility patch. The size reduction came from recompressing archive files, nothing that affects gameplay.

- Niko Bellic’s Full Campaign: All 90+ story missions are present. Both endings, Revenge and Deal, work correctly in this version.
- EFLC Episodes Included: The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony are both here. They start from the same menu as the base game.
- RAGE Physics Engine: Car crashes, ragdoll, and the drunk walk mechanic all work as designed. Physics runs on the CPU, which helps with integrated graphics.
- Full Liberty City Map: All five boroughs are open. Broker, Dukes, Bohan, Algonquin, and Alderney are all available with no locked areas.
- Cover and Blind Fire System: The cover mechanic introduced in GTA 4 works on keyboard and mouse and on controller without any issues.
- Friend Activity System: Bowling, darts, pool, and helicopter tours with Roman and Little Jacob all work. Friendship meters save correctly.
- All 19 Radio Stations Intact: Vladivostok FM, Liberty Rock Radio, The Beat 102.7, and every other station play at original audio quality.
- GFWL Patched Out: Games for Windows Live has been dead since 2014. This version removes that requirement completely. No Microsoft account needed.

How to Download and Install GTA 4 Highly Compressed
- Install 7-Zip or WinRAR on your PC before you do anything else.
- Add the download folder to your antivirus exclusions. Open Windows Security, go to Virus and Threat Protection, then Manage Settings, then Add or Remove Exclusions. Add the folder. Do this before extracting, or the crack file will get deleted.
- Right-click the .7z file and select Extract Here. On an SSD, this takes 8 to 12 minutes. On an HDD, expect up to 25 minutes.
- Open the extracted folder. Find the folder named _CommonRedist. Install both the 2013 and 2019 Visual C++ Redistributables inside it.
- Run the DirectX setup from _CommonRedist as well. This installs the D3DX9 files GTA 4 needs to render.
- Open the main game folder. Right-click GTAIV.exe and run it as Administrator.
- On the first launch, set the resolution to 1280×720 and texture quality to Medium. Exit and relaunch. This prevents the black screen that sometimes appears when the game loads above the GPU limit.

Can GTA 4 run on 8 GB RAM with integrated graphics in 2026?
Yes. I ran it on an Intel UHD 620 with 8 GB of RAM and got 28 to 35 FPS at 720p on low settings. GTA 4 depends on the CPU more than the GPU. That actually helps integrated graphics users. Dense areas like Algonquin will drop to around 20 FPS, but the game stays playable throughout the story.
Does this version include The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony?
Yes. Both EFLC episodes are included. Johnny Klebitz’s biker campaign and Luis Lopez’s nightclub story are both fully playable. All missions, cutscenes, and episode-specific weapons are present.
Why does GTA 4 not launch on Windows 11?
The two most common causes are missing Visual C++ files and Windows blocking the executable. Install all VC++ packages from _CommonRedist first. If it still fails, right-click GTAIV.exe, go to Properties, then Compatibility, and check Run as Administrator. Try Windows 8 compatibility mode as well. Both steps were needed on my Windows 11 test machine.
Final Thoughts
GTA 4 Highly Compressed still works on a budget Core i3 laptop in 2026. The 7.5 GB download is worth it for a game this good.
After extraction, it uses 18 GB, which is still 4 GB less than the original; on a low-space drive, that matters.
